I want to be able to create a site for public transport, where the admin can add routes (of different colours) to google maps, so that it outputs similar to this: http://www.birdtheme.org/useful/v3tool.html

Is this possible, and where on earth would I start? I thought one approach would maybe the admin could add a bunch of co-ordinates (instead of the interactive map above), and then the front end google map would ‘join the dots’.

Best place for you to start is with the Google Maps documentation.  The type of thing you want to do is not trivial or automatic.

Yes, its not trivial or automatic for sure, but I was wondering if there was any kind of recommended plugin available which may help part of the process?
