    Hi,

I’m continually getting the “Unable to save your template as a text file” error when attempting to make changes to templates on my live deployment. I can confirm that the template base path is correct and I’ve assigned full file permissions (777) to the ‘default_site’ directory. I’m also running version 2.3.1. of EE. Could there be anything else I’m missing?

    regards,
    Cathal.

Try to use an absolute path to your templates folder

Yep, I’m already using a full server path to my templates directory. It hasn’t made any difference.

I’ve also tried setting the owner of the directory and those below it to the same user that my Apache processes are running under - www-data. This hasn’t made any diffrerence either. In fact, having already given full permissions to ‘user’, ‘group’ and ‘other’, this step shouldn’t be necessary.

If the path is correct then its a permissions issue most likely. Are you changing permissions on the folder through a FTP program?  If so try a different FTP program. Many times I have seen FTP programs misreport that they changed file/folder permissions. Also, have you assigned the appropriate permissions to all folders and files under the default_site folder?

I can confirm that every folder within ‘templates’ is set to 777 and I tried with both Transmit & Coda. Any other ideas? Thanks…

I have this problem sometimes. Are you creating the template files on your computer first and then trying to upload them, or creating them in the CP and trying to save them? I think most of the time, for me, it’s a owner/group problem. Sometimes the owner/group is different depending on where the file was created. Usually various combinations of trying to sync the files in the CP, creating new files from my editor first and uploading them instead of creating them in the CP. And sometimes is seems like I have to set the permissions for each template file after uploading to 777 even if I already set the folder to 777. Good luck!

Turns out it was Media Temple all along. I’d long been using the absolute server path:

    /nfs/c06/h04/mnt/xxxxx/domains/...

    And they changed it to:

    /nfs/c06/h07/mnt/xxxxx/domains/...

Without informing me, which explains why it worked, then didn’t. Once I figured it out, a rep apologized and suggested it was better to use the relative path:

    /home/domains/xxxxx/...

Since it masks any changes / alterations and he promised to add a KB article about it. Now I know!
