    Hey guys & gals,

We have a new video tutorial out, on how to move your sparkling new EE site from one server to another (or one URL to another address).

    http://www.creat-ee.com/tutorials/more/migrating_your_ee_site_to_live_server

It’s geared towards beginner/intermediate EE folks who (like us) may have had trouble the first couple of times out.

    Thanks!

    Jae

Thanks for sharing this very helpful tutorial. It will come in handy as I move my first EE2.0 site developed in DEV mode to the LIVE server in early january.

In the past I always did all the development on a live version. I much prefer working locally but was fretting about the move to live 😉

    Glad you found it useful.

Please note that we’ve also done successful moves w/o installing a fresh copy on the production server first, but for some reason it always seems to go smoother when you do a fresh install first. I suspect this may be due to all the files being transferred correctly.

    Good luck with the move!

one comment/observation. When you exported the SQL for your dev site from PhpMyAdmin and then re-imported to your live site, I didn’t see any mention of fixing the DB name? For example if its mysite.dev i would have expected one to edit the .sql file to edit it and change all occurrences to: my site.com
If you don’t do this part is there not problem in accessing the DB? Or perhaps by installing the brand new empty EE this part is not needed.

Anyways will give it a try as you spell it out. Again thanks for this. Cheers

    Giovanni,

You don’t have to change the DB name—don’t forget that you can import the data into the existing DB when you installed the fresh copy.

So the config.php file will look for the new DB (from the fresh install), and the DEV data will be imported into that same DB.

Then, use Reelocate to change over all the relevant paths & variables for the new site from the control panel.

    Hope this makes sense 😊

I personally use MAMP (I’m a Mac guy all the way), and it is available for download here. For you Windows users, I would recommend XAMMP, which is available here. There is also an XAMMP version for Mac users
