What’s basically the difference between {group_id} and {member_group}?

They are identical, both are “The Member Group ID number for the currently logged-in user”.

And is one of the above changing when used inside the channel:entries tags? ‘cause I thought that using the group_id to check for an administrator group would work, but I had to change all of them to member_group…
