Hello there,
When i set a maximal height or width in the file upload destination (file manager), the image is correctly resized, BUT the quality of the JPEG is a very low and bad quality.
I like to change the change the JPEG quality parameter.
How to achieve that ?

Thanks for your question. That’s actually not a user-definable setting, unfortunately. Do you have an example of a picture that had bad compression applied to its file? If you could post the before and after, that would be helpful!

It’s clearly a restriction compared to this existing functionnality in EE 1.6.
Is there a way to point it directly in the core of EE ?

That’s unacceptable. Your system is creating less-than-expected quality, and a user is requesting an enhancement for his site. Your code base is open source for a reason. Give this user (as well as everyone else) proper support to facilitate a perfectly understandable request. It’s true that the file upload functionality compresses images causing them to sometimes appear blurred. Users who place a value in the imagery on their website need the ability to control that compression. It’s a serious concern. It’s ridiculous to hear you advise against the proper use of an open source product.

This is an example of the compression quality I am experiencing, I have set no parameters in the File Upload Preferences that would re-size this image or compress it. Both the original, and the uploaded file are 960x627.

Welcome to the forums. We’re glad to have you here. I’m sorry to hear that you are dissatisfied with Kevin’s response to cremaster.

Kevin was trying to get additional information to help troubleshoot this issue as it is very unexpected that ExpressionEngine would be creating degraded images. I can definitely see the degradation in image quality in your example image. One possible cause of this comes to mind and that is that perhaps you are using GD instead of GD2 for image manipulation.

Could you go to Admin > System Administration > Image Resizing Preferences and let me know what Image Resizing Protocol is being used by EE? If it is not GD2, please change it if possible.

I would also like to take this opportunity to clarify that there are absolutely no restrictions on editing the source code of ExpressionEngine. We, however, do not encourage it or provide support for hacking core files as the hack may cause trouble when it comes time to upgrading to a newer version.

Please let me know if changing to GD2 fixes your image compression issue.

Out of interest I’m noticing really poor image quality on any images that ExpressionEngine does a resize of. I’m currently using GD2 as well. This issue was picked up by our client who noticed the staff profiles were slightly blurry.

We’ve done further testing and can confirm this is due to ExpressionEngine resizing and saving the image. If we turn that off image quality is fine.
