MSM and member "ownership"

We’re building out a bunch of new sites for a new series of web zines. We’re using MSM for this since, among other things, in some cases an article might appear on more than one site.

We’re going to have member registration primarily for leadgen reasons. (No forums or anything like that.)

So here’s the challenge: The Powers That Be (ie, this isn’t something I can push back on) want it so that if a user registers through site A then, in terms of budget lines and leadgen goals, that user “belongs” to site A even if he later is on site B and downloads a whitepaper or something.

So I was wondering first if there’s any native flag that indicates what site in an MSM cluster a user registered on, and if not, is there a module or an extension that might add that functionality.

Worse case, I could add a custom field and story the ‘owning’ site there, I guess, but I’d then want to hide that field on the Edit Profile pages and such.

I honestly haven’t had a lot of experience with memberships and MSM so this might be a dumb question… 😊
