Two nagging little problems with membership registration and password retrieval.

I’m posting in community support because I don’t believe this to be a bug or a known problem - but maybe someone can suggest a Hail Mary or two - both of these problems have been fairly long term.

EE 1.7 now, but it happened way before this version….

    1. Unable to submit Captcha and/or word does not take….
I have an alternative captcha now - (question), but it happened with the regular one and now this one. That is, maybe one out of each 20 members who tries to register cannot - they have to email me. I can only guess I’m losing other members who try and go away.

This used to be a problem we’d blame on AOL - their network was notorious for doing this due to some kind of cache issue…..but now there is no similarity between the folks who report is. Some use macs, some windows, some ipads, some Safari, some IE…..

It seems like a fixable problem because, frankly, I can’t imagine the big sites have this problem…Amazon, eBay and other merchants would never be able to manually register 5% of their users.

Any guesses welcome! I’m wondering if it is a nocache issue of some sort….any code I might install into the register template???

    2. Password resetting works sometimes, other times it does not.

This is a strange one! I often have reports from users that they lose their passwords and attempt a reset - but the reset does not let them get back in! I have to go in and manually set their PW to something else…...

But I have tried it and it works for me! I have to assume it works for some others, although I don’t know how or if I can track there.

This is a test. Are there any true geniuses out there???
    :cheese:

I’ve seen similar problems when your IP address fluctuates. In the old days, that was AOL. Might some of these users be behind firewalls and the like?

It could be, but since my memberships is probably similar to other EE users, it makes sense others would have the same problem(s)?

Also, as I mentioned, it makes sense that other apps around the web would have the same problem to a large extent…....that is, if the same users don’t have problems elsewhere, it seems strange they would with me…..

Maybe you know, Sure - are all the templates having to do with registering and captchas specified as not going into any cache? Maybe there is some code I can put in the template which is more modern…I know cache is complicated, because servers do it as well as browsers…and sometimes ISP’s, etc…....
