    Hi,

I’m having the exact same problem as found below, but cannot seem to solve the issue:

    http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/202998/

Any custom field with a type of FILE just gives me the “You do not have access to the directory specified for this field” when I try to publish a new entry or edit a current one.

File upload preferences are not being restricted by member groups - there is only one user currently, a Super Admin.

File upload paths are correct, as I can upload directly through the File Manager.

All upload destination folder permissions are set to 777.

I’m not really sure how else to debug here. Thanks!

    Hi, Shellster.

Can you tell us which version/build of EE2.x you’re using? See EEWiki:// HowTo Determine My EE Version

Is this EE’s File custom field? Is this from the back end or the front end?

I solved the issue. No need to look any further. Thanks.

Update: Apparently the issue is still persisting.

    I’m running v2.3.1 - Build: 20111017.

Yes, this is happening in the CP after creating a new custom field with type FILE (in a custom field group).

When I attempt to publish an entry in the specified channel, the FILE custom field simply displays “You do not have access to the directory specified for this field”, so no file can be uploaded.

    Hi, Shellster.

Are you attempting this as a SuperAdmin, or one of the other member groups? If you create a new file upload setting, only SuperAdmins automatically have access to that file upload setting.

    Might that be the problem?

Yes, I am attempting it as a Super Admin, under the account “b4m_admin”, which was the Admin acount created at installation. The site is still in development, so the only members with CP access ARE Super Admins (see attached photo).

The only other piece of information I can provide is that this seems to be occurring intermittently. Sometimes I will create a new custom field and will initially have no issues uploading, then when I return later to edit an existing entry I will receive the error.

I seem to be getting this issue too - You do not have access to the directory specified for this field.

I’m a SuperAdmin, I’ve tried it on a number of local and remote server environments. Server paths, privileges, channel and upload prefs have all been checked.

I’m also running V2.3.1 - Build: 20111017 - upgraded from EE 1.0. Uploading via the filemanager works fine, it’s just the file field that has issues.

It seems to be a JS issue. Disabling JS does upload the file to the server, but without JS won’t let you add it to the page.

Weird thing, I tried replacing the field with Assets, but part of that seems to break too - again JS.

Completely at a lose what to try now.

Ouch- intermittent errors are a bear.  But thanks for the big hint, Supercool.

OK- let me have you both do this:
    1. Be sure you are using full vs relative paths in your File upload prefs;
    2. File manager seems to work- only Publish fails (yell if untrue)
    3. Problem somewhat intermittent, so like a new file may not fail
    4. Are either of you using saved layouots?  If so- is it possible to delete a layout and test if that matters
    5. The biggie- are you getting any JS errors when it fails?  If so, can you paste them?
    6. Related- what browsers are you guys testing in?

Sorry for the irritating bug, let’s see if we can track it down.

    Ok:

    1. yup
    2. true
    3. also true (create a new field, works for a bit then dies…)
    4. no, reset to be sure
    5. no
    6. Latest Chrome / FF on Mac, IE7 on Windows

Thanks - in relation to number 3, I have a new field currently working, I’ll let you know if/when it dies.

    6. FF 3.6.24 Mac & Safari 5.0.1 Mac / Latest FF on Windows 7

Thanks to both- and also ‘blarg’!  Do either of you currently have one that’s failing on a site I can get access to?  If so, let me know and I’ll drop an email with some details on how to proceed.  Need to see this in action, as it’s very weird!

    Thanks Robin,

I’ve just sent you cp/ftp details.

Try the channel ‘Services’. The ‘thumbnail’ field is the original on that doesn’t work. ‘New Thumbnail’ is the one we’ve just created that does work

Hrm- I do indeed see the problem in action.  K- let me poke and then I will update the both of you.  It really is just pulling back no available directories- which is odd!
