Scientific site with complex indexing of content

    Hi,

I’ve built a good few sites with EE now and love the ease of build time and use etc. for most types of sites.

I’m scoping out options for a slightly different kind of site and would love to use EE, but I just need to confirm to myself that the needs for this site are met either by EE itself, or EE with a couple of add-ons.

So the site is a scientific based site, where there is a need to have almost infinite ways of drilling down information.  There’s a need to tag (multiple tags) each piece of information that is added to the site.  Data could come in the following formats:

    Text
      -Subject
      - summary
      - author
      - company
This could be one fieldset, but would need the ability to assign multipple tags to the info. For example DNA, Molecule, text content

    Images
      - single, high-res, or multiple (slideshow).
Again, this would need to have the same tags assigned.

Data files such as Ppt, Doc, PDF
These will need to be tagged in the same.

It should be possible to display text articles and view all available info which has the same tags, or to access the info. Available for certain tags:

    Eg.
    Search examples:

‘author name AND 2010’ - result would be all items created by that author in 2010
‘molecule xyzzy’ - result would be all items available that have been tagged with molecule xyzzy, possibly broken down by content, or year, or author etc.

So complex indexing of information and complex ways of accessing it.

It would be by helpful to know what add-ons might assist with this, for example I’m aware of the EE taxonomy add-on, but not entirely sure if it would lend itself well to this project.  Also would be great to know of any EE based sites that have a similar ‘structure’.

    Many thanks,
    Tony

    Hi Tony

On first look it certainly appears more than possible, but in this case it’s a bit more of a puzzle that’s got to be assembled.

I’d probably go for a multiple Channels approach, eg

    Channel for images
    - each image entry can have various sizes + tags + categorisation etc

    Channel for files
    - eg PDF’s, again each entry could be tagged, categorised etc

Channels for other sets of data?

And finally a Channel for “articles” or “pages”, in which each entry could pull in data from the other Channels using a combination of addons such as Tag and Playa, plus it’s own custom fields of course.

Once all that’s in place it should be fairly straightforward do search or filter any data ior groups of data.

    Does that make sense?

    Hi TC-uk,

Rob’s plan seems like a god one at first glance and not knowing your specifics. Do you think it will help?

    Hi Rob and John,

Many thanks for the info. Rob - looks like it might be a go-er which is great news.

I forgot to mention that in the sites ‘native’ display, the Text, Images and Data files mentioned in my initial post *could* all relate to the same single ‘posting’.  But they do need to be accessible and searchable separately (or together).  Not sure if that makes a difference.

    An example would be:

    Article xyx title
    Article xyx author
    Article xyx company
    Article xyx description
    Article xyx image files
    Article xyx data files

So the next step for me would be to create a prototype to demonstrate.  I’m not getting any ££ for doing so, since it will be a demo to show the client.  Does this mean I can use EE core? and then buy a license when the client bites.  I appreciate that the 3rd party modules WILL need to be purchased demo or not.

Many thanks again for your input!

    Best regards,
    Tony

    Hi, Tony.

We no longer have an EECore version. Instead we offer a thirty day money back guarantee. You need to purchase a license for that particular demo.
