This question may be related to a resolved thread.

I’m glad this was resolved, but nowhere does it explain how to address this, so I’m asking again… thanks.

Haven’t seen this before, but I think it’s the first time I’ve ever used a custom field as “file”

    Hi Michael,

If you head to your File Upload Preferences. Each instance of an upload location has the option to restrict by member group

    Does that help?

John (or is it John Henry?),

Thanks for following up.  That’s not it - I’m currently setting up a site and I’m the only member/user and I’m a Super Admin. I do see where you’re referring, but doesn’t apply as “Super Admins can always upload files”. I’ve double-checked permissions, and that doesn’t seem to be it either.

I changed the field type to text input, then I can use the file uploader withn the form, put the reference there, and that can work for me, but that wasn’t what I intended.  I’m realizing I’ve never set up a field type as “file” before, so I’m feeling like a bit of a novice.

I’ll keep tweaking, if you think if anything, let me know.

    Thanks!

    Michael

    Hi Michael Layne,

Are you able to upload directly using the File Manager? Are you only experiencing this when you try to use the File field type in your channel? If you create a test channel and channel fields, do you see the same behavior?

    Cheers,

Note related thread.  I’m not keen on merging, but Michael if you shift over there I’ll close this thread.  May be a separate issue, so no pressure to do so.  http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/203506/
