I am trying to use advanced search to be able to search on a category or keyword.

On many web sites you can search by category and/or keyword.  If keyword is blank then you just search on the category.
But if category is selected and keyword is not blank, you search on keyword AND category.

Is there a solution to this using EE2 without writing PHP code and SQL queries?

If the Advanced Search module doesn’t quite do what you need here then you would indeed be looking at a custom solution here.

You may want to take a look at the Solspace Super Search Module or there might be something over on devot-ee.com that could also help here.

Ah well.  I have been looking at the pricey but very good supersearch.
I also wrote my own PHP/SQL code but too much of a pain to maintain and modify.  So SuperSearch seems likely.
