    Hello,

I am interested in purchasing EE for a client and developing a new website for them.

I was hoping to install the website on a static ip address and then when completed push the domain name to the completed site.

Will EE just “work” when the DNS is pushed to the completed ip address site or will there be needed modifications for it to work properly? If so, what types of steps will we need to take?

I couldn’t find anything through the forum except for migrating a whole instillation, which we are not doing as we are hoping to just change the site URL.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi, EOCDesign.

There are several ways you could handle this.

    1. Use the IP address in paths, and when the site is ready to go live, update the paths to the actual domain name. You can use Deeply Helper (found on Devot-ee.com) to assist with this.

    2. Modify your hosts file to have the ip address mapped to the client’s upcoming domain name. This works, but if you need to show a client while you’re developing, it would be a pain to try to walk them through changing their host’s file.

    Does that help?

    Hello Sue,

Thank you for the quick response!

So if I understand your first method correctly:

1: I can install EE on a IP Address, create the theme, test etc…
2: Run Deeploy Helper to change all the references of the IP Address to the Domain Name
    3: Push DNS
4: EE now runs on Domain Name as smoothly as if installed on it?

The reason I am double checking is we typically use WordPress which is a nightmare to switch from an IP to domain name and I wanted to make sure that EE isn’t just as bad or worse…

    I really appreciate your help!

    Cheers!

That’s pretty much all you need to do.

One other thing I’ll mention - build your links like this:

    path="templategroup/templatename"

so you don’t have to manually change anything that refers to the domain name.
