    Hi EE,

I’ve just registered with EngineHosting and require two new websites with separate domains - I own both sites, they aren’t for clients.  I’d like to add Multiple Site Manager to run them.  One is a profit-making operation, the other will be my freelancer blog.

What licenses do I require?  It looks like Freelancer doesn’t operate with MSM so do I need a Non-Commercial license instead, plus a Commercial one?  And I get a 20% discount on the Commercial license only?

And what is the installation sequence for EE 2.2.2 with MSM and both domains?

    Thanks!

You would need a commercial license + MSM, which would give you up to 3 sites (and you can purchase more later if needed).

As for the 20% discount, I do believe it is EE only but it’s offered by EngineHosting, so please confirm with them.

You would simply follow the EE Install Instructions then the MSM install steps listed in the user guide.  EngineHosting can help you out with the actual domain pointing.

    Does that help?

So the single Commercial license covers both sites?

And the MSM licence is $199.95 to go with the Commercial licence?

The EE license covers 1 Site; the MSM license adds 2 Sites to that.

And yep, you got the pricing right. =)

OK understood now, thanks - but EngineHosting were telling me a different story:

“One Non-Commercial license for your main domain.  One Commercial License for use with a new secondary domain mull.co and apply the 20% discount.  You will still need to obtain the MSM license from directly from expressionengine.com.”

I’m reading that a bit differently; with EH thinking that you wanted two full EE licenses.

So I think it’s just a different take.

But with MSM you can’t mix/match licenses, in your case you’ll need a full commercial installation.

    Make sense?

Having one full Commercial license (installation) with the MSM purchase then added on, I understand.  What wasn’t clear to me was whether additional sites (under the MSM) required additional full $300 Commercial licenses.  You’ve told me that there are two more sites which can be added under this installation, and after that there’s a $50 charge for additional MSM site instances, whether they are ‘commercial’ or not - because you can’t mix/match licenses, yes?

I’m seeing now that, where MSM is involved, the EE ‘license’ more accurately refers to one ‘installation’ with additional ‘sites’ (or ‘instances’) under that installation.  Its not very clear in the online pre-sales info, and possibly not to EH staff, since I did explain exactly what I was looking for…

Anyway I’m happy with what you’ve explained here, thanks Lisa!

The answer is ‘no’ so long as they’re Additional Sites under MSM.  If they’re a separate installation then you need a new license.

after that there’s a $50 charge for additional MSM site instances, whether they are ‘commercial’ or not - because you can’t mix/match licenses, yes?

    Yes.

Thanks for the feedback! I’ll work with the team to see if we can clarify those points a bit more.  For now you’re all set?
