    Hi,

trying to use categories to build a sub navigation, my problem is I have 5 categories (sub-menu entries) and I want each one to click (navigate) to its own template as the content associated with each sub-menu entry is slightly different (eg: team, history, awards etc)
so the ‘team’ category would navigate to the ‘team’ template (page design) and so on, am I right in thinking that categories by default link to the category results page ie one single template?
Alternatively seen that Taxonomy looks good but as per recent tutorials attempting to stick to ‘out-of-the-box’ functionality, any pointers greatly appreciated!, thanks.

    Hi w3studio,

Welcome to ExpressionEngine and the forums!

To get this to work automatically, you would need to turn on category_url_title by navigating to Admin-> Channel Administration-> Global Preferences: Use Category URL Titles In Links? set to “Yes” Below that you will see “Category URL Indicator”. Here you will need to set a reserved word that will let the parser know you are passing a category title to the template. You are free to to use the default “category”.

Keep in mind how this will affect your URL structure. Using this method, your URLs will look similar to:

    <a href="http://www.example.com/index.php/template_group/template/category/category_url_title">http://www.example.com/index.php/template_group/template/category/category_url_title</a>

There are several useful add-ons that would make managing your navigation much more simple. There are even a few well known add-ons that can do amazing things with categories. Look at navEE and seg2cat.

    Cheers,

Thanks Dan, just getting to grips with the power of categories but the functionality of switching the design template page per list item, but navEE looks great. Do you know of any content sliders which are worth a look re use with EE?

    Thanks again

    w3studio,

You practically get any content slider jQuery or otherwise work with EE. Popular ones being Nivo slider and SlideDeck. It’s just a matter of formatting/constructing your template to match the expected format of slideshow content.

    Does that help?

Thanks John I was unsure how content could be added/edited if it was using jQuery to format the appearance (ie slider), but sounds very good, cheers

    Hi w3studio,

Sounds like Dan & John have got you all sorted here now so I’ll close this thread out.

If anything else crops up then please don’t hesitate to post again as needed.

    Thanks,
