Best way to create a 'links' section

I’ve recently added a links channel to a website. I created two custom fields, ‘link-text’ and ‘link-url’ and added the channel entries tag to the footer template. It works, and in this respect all is well.

However there’s one thing I’m not sure about. Every time the client wants to add a link he selects it from the publish menu, and both the automatically generated title and URL fields are displayed as well as the custom fields. Is there any way to only show the ‘link-title’ and ‘link-url’ fields? I realise that I could add a note to the publish template asking the user to add the link-text using the title field, but this isn’t really what I want to achieve.

I’m also having a very similar problem with a ‘Reports section’ where he uploads the document and the name of the report.

I’m new to ExpressionEngine, and I have a nagging feeling that I’m going about this in the wrong way…

Were it me I’d use the title field for the link-text, and use a Publish Page Layout to hide the url-title field.

Completely missed that functionality - thanks!
