This question may be related to a resolved thread.

I ran into this same issue on a site that had been put on the back-burner by a client, I went through the update and go the attached error.  I realized I had neglected to clear the cache, so I renamed the installer folder, went back into the CP, cleared the cache and tried re-running the installer.  I got the same error.

What would be my best course of action?

    Thanks,
    Drew

    Hi Drew,

What version are you upgrading from?

We have a wiki entry titled Troubleshooting Upgrade Errors which will be helpful in this instance.

Take a look at Kevin’s answer here which explains your error for you and where to go with it.

Let us know how you get on

    Hi John,

    I’m updating from 2.1.5.

I ran through this: http://expressionengine.com/wiki/Troubleshooting_Upgrade_Errors#Retrying_After_a_Failed_Upgrade and am now getting this error:

    A Database Error Occurred
    Error Number: 1060

    Duplicate column name ‘salt’

ALTER TABLE `exp_members` ADD `salt` VARCHAR(128) DEFAULT ‘’ NOT NULL

    Filename: updates/ud_220.php

    Line Number: 153

I checked the table exp_members and ‘salt’ exists with those characteristics. Next steps?

    Thanks,
    Drew

    shotgunflat,

I’m sorry this update is proving to be so troublesome. Would you mind trying the procedure outlined in this section of the wiki article? I know that you’ve tried that process after a previous error, but it is the best way forward.

    Cheers,

    Hi Dan,

I cleared everything and went through the update instructions again.  I got the same 1061 error listed in my first post.

    Thanks,
    Drew

    Hi Drew,

Just wanted to check that you first wiped your database completely before attempting the restore?

You will need to do that first otherwise you will end up with duplicated tables / fields etc which could be causing the problems here.

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Hi Drew,

Thanks for your patience on this. Please keep your eye out for an email from me, and make sure your site is in it’s pre-upgrade state. I want to take a look at your database directly in order to nail down what’s happening here.

    Hi Kevin,

Just filled out the form for you.  Please note that the site is live at /index.html, the EE version (/index.php) is not currently live.

    Thanks,
    Drew

    Thanks for the details, Drew.

I just logged in and took a look at your tables. From what I can tell, there are several items in your database that shouldn’t be there until version 2.2 or higher. It looks like this database may be a backup taken after at least one failed attempt to upgrade. Do you happen to have a backup of your site from before any upgrade was attempted on your 2.1.5 installation?

Yes I do. Should I upload?

    Hi Drew,

Indeed, you should roll your database back to its pre-update state in the event the update process fails. That way your database schema matches your ExpressionEngine version.

Everything is rolled back to 2.1.5.  What’s my next step?

    Drew,

Now that you have your database and site files rolled back to your pre-upgrade state, the next step is to attempt the update again. Of course, *after* you capture a complete backup. Be sure to read through and understand each step in the update instructions and keep the troubleshooting wiki at hand. Keep us posted on your progress.

    Cheers,
