Plugins - How many? Which ones? Too many?

Just a quick question to other developers out there. I recently took over site management and when I did, the plug-in manager was broken along with some other features. When I threw EE on a QA server I was able to break it down and find the errors.

    My main questions are these…

How many plug-ins and extensions do developers generally use for a large, complex site?

What are your favorite, “must-have”, includes?

How many is “too many”? How much is “too much”?

The reason I ask is because there were 54 plug-ins being used, 54 extensions, and 56 modules.

This seems extreme, but I am scared to pull any out due to dependencies I may be unaware of. With the dawn of a redesign in the near future, I would like to gather some opinions as to the best ones to use so I can keep overhead and debugging to a minimum.

    Thanks everyone.

I remember this being discussed before but can’t find the thread 😊

That does seem a lot of addons to be using, I’m building a fairly large complex site at the moment and reckon on about a dozen. It really depends on the site though, but it’s not unknown for devs who aren’t that familiar with EE to use addons when you can do the same with native functionality - this may stem from them being used to systems that need addons for even basic tasks.

For a super list of the most used addons see Joel Bradbury’s EE addon graph.
