Hi,

I recently bought a non-commercial license for EE2. Until now, I’ve been learning EE2 locally (via WAMP/localhost), but I’m far enough along that I really need to go forward developing the website I bought EE for on a live server. Here are the issues/questions I have about the install:

1. The site I will be converting to EE is http://www.caspca.org. This is currently a live and active site that I can’t disrupt until the new EE site is ready to publish. Can I simply create a new directory and develop the new site within that directory, (e.g., http://www.caspca.org/ee/) then just move everything to the root once I’m ready to publish the EE site?

2. Where/how does my EE2 license come into play during the installation? (do I somehow have to declare the valid domain for the license?)

3. caspca.org is currently hosted on an IIS server, and I know that’s the first thing I need to address; getting it switched over to Apache. Can you please point me toward the EE installation wizard (?? (server wizard??) - whatever “wizard” I’ve heard makes the installation a lot easier (so I’m told : ) once the server is switched?

Yes this is perfectly ok for developing a site. You could also set up a new site via your WAMP and start developing locally.

Your license is what you agree to when you download your copy of EE. It does not come into play at install time. It is perfectly ok to use your copy of EE to develop locally and and have one live site as long as both are intended for the same domain.

The requirements and Server wizard can be found here in the docs. Since you are looking for new hosting it may be a good idea as I suggested to develop your site locally rather than have to deal with 2 sites when migrating platform.

Thanks for the help. I’m glad to know I can set up a special directory on the live site and develop the new site there. I have been developing locally (a dummy site) just to learn EE. However, I’m going to have to go through the video course again as I build the (actual) new caspca site (too much to absorb in just one round of training). Developing locally, there are things I haven’t been able to do by the method described in the training videos; for example, getting rid of the “index.php” in page URLs via the File & Directory Check method. Also, by developing on the live server, I’ll be able to show my client the progress, and I’ll have the peace of mind of knowing that EE is installed and ready to go live.

Thanks for pointing me to the wizard. I was familiar with EE’s server specs, which I had already sent to the ISP, and they said they met the requirements. So only the hosting change is switching to a conducive server. At least, that’s the PLAN. : )

Thank you again. I’ll probably have more questions/issues with the actual server install, so I don’t know if you want to keep this thread open, or have me start a new thread with more specific questions. I expect to do the server install in the next few days.
