This question may be related to a resolved thread.

I realize there’s a number of threads already open regarding the photo gallery module being removed…

At any rate, I wanted to check if there is still a plan for a new gallery module in 2.x and/or a migration tool for those currently using the gallery module in 1.x?  Is there any chance of cancellation?

I have some extensive content updating to do on a website that still uses the gallery module in 1.x, and wanted to confirm that there is still a solid* plan for some type of migration tool before adding all the new content.  If I need to come up with an alternative solution, I’d rather upgrade to 2.x and work on that now with less content than later with more content and galleries…

    Hey bromtec,

There will not be a gallery module for EE 2. But, a migration tool is actively being worked on, and will be a “solid plan” that will convert your gallery entries into EE 2.

If the site relies heavily on the gallery module, I suggest you wait until this plan is implemented.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!

Wow!  I am shocked that the gallery feature is no more in ee2.2!  That said, what 3rd party gallery or code have ee2.x users implemented, that works nicely?

    This was a major feature-set lost…

    Thanks in advance!

The heart of EE has always been it’s flexible weblog/channel module that can be shaped to deliver many types of content.  It always struck me as odd that the photo gallery seemed like a half-baked version of the weblog module only with a fixed content type of photos.  The gallery had limited custom fields, no comment moderation, a limited number of size options, and a tagset that seemed intent on table-based layouts.

Look into either a channel-based approach using Matrix, a file field, and a plugin to dynamically resize images, or Channel Images from Dev Demon.  I’ve done the former a number of times with good results, and have heard great things about the latter.

Thank you for your feedback Boyink!

You don’t know how much I needed that!...

Shows you how much the gallery feature meant to ee users despite how inflexible it may have become since ee version 1.x, but you are right, the new implementation would have to live up to the heart and soul of ee 2.2.

I’ll give the former a try as I previously looked at the features of both ee add-ons falling short of my particular requirements.
