Cannot access site/control panel after deleting "Structure" related table/records from database

    Good morning,

I had installed bot the third-party “Structure” module and the “pages” module and found that they were incompatible.

I uninstalled both pages and structure, used the data management tools in ee to remove the structure tables (4 in all) as well as the structure rows from exp_modules (no pages related rows seemed to be present).

I then tried to reinstall structure and was sent to the screen that lists the install option for extension, module, etc.

When I tried to complete the install from that screen, I received a 500 server error. I tried to return to the control panel and received the same 500 server error.

I cannot access the ee control panel or bring up any pages (even those not developed using structure) from the site.

I tried rebooting the server but I still cannot access the site or ee.

I’m a novice with both ExpressionEngine and web server administration so I hope I’m missing something obvious. Do you know what could have triggered this?

As a follow up to my post, I received a detailed error message with the following information when attempting to access the ee login page of my site:

    Detailed error information:

    Module: FastCgiModule
    Notification: ExecuteRequestHandler
    Handler: PHP_via_FastCGI
    Error Code: 0x00000000

The ExpressionEngine install and site had been running well until I attempted to delete the Structure table and related data from the database. No changes have been made to the server at all. Only to the database.

Could anyone help me find a way to restore access to the site?

    WebDawg,

During the uninstall process Structure should have cleaned up after itself. Have you contacted Jack or Travis regarding this issue? My suggestion to get you back up immediately would be to revert to your backup and just uninstall without deleting the tables.

I had tried uninstalling without deleting the tables and travis suggested that I uninstall and remove the tables. I’ve been posting on the structure support forum bit they suggested that I post here instead, indicating that they thought the issue was an ExpressionEngine routing/loading issue and not something structure specific.

The only changes made, however, were the following:

The exp_structure, exp_structure_channels, exp_structure_listings, and exp_structure_settings tables were deleted from the database.

The “Structure” related row was deleted from the exp_modules table.

No other changes were made to the server or ee settings but as soon as the tables and the table row were deleted, I could no longer access the site or the admin login page.

    WebDawg,

Unless I am missing something I hate to say this but Travis or Jack are going to have to provide you with some assistance here. This is not an issue with ExpressionEngine as I can tell. You uninstalled their add-on. It should clean up after itself. If it does not then they need to fix that. If they tell you to uninstall tables from the database then they need to give you a reason why and support you if something goes wrong.

I really am sorry that you are in this situation. I still stand by my suggestion to revert back to your backup (assuming you have one) and just uninstalling their add-on. Uninstalling it should have been enough to allow you to continue to work.

I am moving this to the Community Help forum to allow you to continue to seek help. I will stay subscribed.

We’ve have indeed been supporting and going back and forth with WebDawg on this through our forum. Right now we’re trying to get CP/FTP info to look further. So far, it doesn’t seem like a Structure issue though. Our uninstall does take care of the needed items, but conflicts arise when Pages is installed at the same time, which is why we have several steps, docs and read me files indicating so. Deleting those tables wouldn’t affect the rest of EE, but we’re trying to see what else the cause could be. That ticket is here: https://structure.tenderapp.com/discussions/problems/1261-pages-and-structure-issue

The site is on a non-production server at the moment and the Sys admin is unavailable for the next two weeks. As I mentioned earlier, I’m new to server administration but I will try to set up an FTP account for you tomorrow morning and let you know when it is available.

I now have an ftp account set up for you on the Windows Server 2008 box that houses the ExpressionEngine site. Please contact me and I will give you the information you need to access the server.

    Thanks for your help,

    Darin

I’m awaiting word from the Structure team to see if they have a diagnosis of the issue and/or a resolution. If we determine there is no other option, do I need to totally delete/uninstall ExpressionEngine and re-install or can I replace any specific files within ExpressionEngine to get back to a functional state?

I’m sorry for the rudimentary nature of the question but I’m pretty new to ExpressionEngine and to server configuration/maintenance so I want to make sure I find the simplest and cleanest path to get the site back online.

    Thanks for your help.

Still no responses to my last posts so I’m moving ahead and trying something to get back in production.

I downloaded clean files from ExpressionEngine and uploaded the following files/folders to my server (overwriting the existing site files):

    admin.php
    index.php
    system/
    themes/

I also renamed the system folder as I did in the previous installation and edited the new index.php file to point to the renamed system folder.

Now when I try to pull up the site homepage, I receive the following error message:

“Your config file does not appear to be formatted correctly.”

When I try to access the site’s ExpressionEngine control panel login, I now see the “ExpressionEngine Installation and Update Wizard” page with a button labeled, “Click here to begin!”

Once again, I apologize for asking elementary questions, but should I proceed with the installation/update wizard? I’m not updating to a new version but overwriting the old files has restored some level of access to the system.

Is proceeding with the installation/update process the best option at this point?

I sincerely appreciate any help that anyone can offer.

If you install then you are starting from scratch. Is this a site that is currently built out or are you starting on a new one?

It has never gone live but a considerable bit of work had been done in regard to developing templates and site structure.

Do you still have a copy of the site with all of the development done?
