I just created a new blank site installation using v2.2.1, build 20110705.
On some of my other EE2 sites, I haven’t had a problem creating a new template group in my file directory (along with an index.html) file and having it automatically recognized as a template.

Unfortunately with this new installation, unless I log into the Control Panel and access the Template Manager first, I get a 404 error.

I am using the MediaTemple (gs) hosting package.

    Hi shinka,

What version are your other EE2 sites? I am not certain that that method is designed to work, but I’m used to synchronizing templates after creating new groups.

It works for me on every site I’ve tested so far. One running v2.1.1 build 20101020, one running v2.1.0 build 20100810, and the other running v2.1.2 build 20101220. I could keep going, but you get the idea.

    Hi, shinka.

What kind of text editor are you using to create these entries? What time zone are you in compared to MT? (They are in Pacific time zone if I remember correctly. How are you putting the files in there?

I use Coda for the Mac to organize and edit my files. I’m in Central Time zone. You don’t think this has to do with that old 2.1 DST bug do you? I thought that had been squished awhile ago.

    Hey shinka,

    Just a couple questions,

    1) Have you made sure you have enabled “save files as templates” from the control panel?
    2) Have you verified the path they are being saved to?
    3) Do you have all your templates inside a “default_site” folder within your “templates” folder? (/system/expressionengine/templates/default_site/)
    4) When creating new template groups, have you ensured they are named with the .group extension?

Hopefully these questions will help get you taken care of.

    Thanks!

    1) templates saved as files: yes
    2) verified path: yes
    3) default_site folder: yes
    4) .group extention: yes

Templates wouldn’t be working at all if these things weren’t correct, right?

    shinka,

I wonder if this might not be a permissions issue with the host. Could you compare for us the differences between your other installations and the hosts their on? If it’s the same host, to which user and group do the files belong?

On the same host, the user and group appear to be the same across installations.

Do you have anything added to your config.php file that’s not there by default? If you could, please upgrade your installation to the latest version (released earlier this week) just to make sure we’re all testing on the same version.
