is there a way of cropping an avatar while uploading on the server? Or is there any plugin which can do that? The users of our website don’t have any graphic programs which can do that before uploading the avatars, so I wonder if there’s any way to do it while uploading a file?

I’ve always used http://devot-ee.com/add-ons/image-sizer/ to resize images via templates (not upload)

PipSpratt, what bluedreamer suggests is probably the easiest way to go. That plugin gives you the best way to control images, and keep your design functioning correctly.

Another option is using the built in file manager which allows you to crop images you’ve uploaded.

You can access that under “Content -> Files -> File Manager -> Edit Image by clicking the icon -> Then Enter Crop Mode”.
