Hey all, looks like my response to e-man was (again) taken out of context. Here’s the reality of the situation:
• Support for Socialee continues unabated.
• A new version with support for EE2.2 was just released last night. Go get it at the Socialee page on devot-ee.
• The module currently does exactly what it’s supposed to and does it very well. There’s no reason to continue development in the short term, which, as Brandon pointed out on the eeinsider post is exactly where most successful, bug free add-ons sit in their product life-cycle.
• Socialee is a complex product that also pulls updated profile data from users as they sign in, provides sharing widgets and social analytics for signins and sharing, it supports 20+ authentication providers through Janrain and adapts to mobile browsers. It’s also very important to note that Janrain will charge $10/month for a Plus account in addition to what you pay for Socialee, to gain all of these advanced features. Socialee is certainly not for your average brochure site. It’s a serious tool for serious sites and the price reflects this.
It’s our understanding that ExpressionEngine is a professional tool and you pay for that level of product. This isn’t Wordpress. The add-on community here is indeed dynamic and I think the best thing that can happen is that devs like Yuri come along and release competent, competitive add-ons that force us to step up.
We’ve seriously considered giving away Socialee as an opensource module and charging only for support a la Magento, but our experience with this tends to be frustration all around, not to mention the complexities of setting up support/consulting agreements for every user who needs a 30 min fix (which is almost everyone due to the complex install!).
