Socialee: no further development

News on the further development of Socialee:

We are supporting it, but have no cause for further development at this point. Given the extensive support we’ve had to provide, we barely break even. When we have another project for which it requires further development then we will certainly do so; as a stand alone project it can not come close to justifying the kind of effort that you might expect from other add-on makers such as Brandon Kelly or Solspace. Our company is focused on client development, not selling modules.

Well, that’s too bad, considering that (I believe?) it’s the most expensive add-on out there.

Given the constantly evolving nature of authentication methods and services, discontinuing active development on this module effectively kills it. I certainly wouldn’t entrust a client’s core functions to something that might not work tomorrow.

Yep, Socialee is/was an expensive solution, but the only addon for Twitter and Google Connect. I think that EE absolutely needs a solution for Login via the three big networks Google, Twitter and Facebook. I just know the Solspace module for Facebook.

Ya… It definitely serves the need, which is why it’s sad to see development halted.

Perhaps Solspace will expand FB Connect to include authentication for other social networks (Twitter, Google, etc)... Though I doubt it.

If no future development is planned, and you break even with the cost of support, why not just open source it? You are probably not motivated to support it you’re not making money, so why should anyone buy it?

Exactly why I advised the client to go with Solspace’s Facebook connect instead of social-ee.
Frankly I find it incredible there’s no viable option to include Twitter, Gmail en OpenId logins for an EE-site (apart from custom-coding it yourself of course).
It’s an often requested feature, even though personally I don’t allow any social network access to my data in exchange for a login/membership of another site.

Well… it appears someone was anticipating this: http://devot-ee.com/add-ons/social-login/

Great, I made a test with Twitter, it works perfect!

Anyone has this working on a live site so we can see this in action?

Don’t think so, because it’s been released just recently. But you could ask Yuri if he has (or can set up) a demo somewhere.

Hi everyone, I’m the developer of Social Login

Sorry there’s no public demo yet (apparently I should run a demo site for all my addons…)

Hey all, looks like my response to e-man was (again) taken out of context. Here’s the reality of the situation:
    • Support for Socialee continues unabated.
    • A new version with support for EE2.2 was just released last night. Go get it at the Socialee page on devot-ee.
    • The module currently does exactly what it’s supposed to and does it very well. There’s no reason to continue development in the short term, which, as Brandon pointed out on the eeinsider post is exactly where most successful, bug free add-ons sit in their product life-cycle.
    • Socialee is a complex product that also pulls updated profile data from users as they sign in, provides sharing widgets and social analytics for signins and sharing, it supports 20+ authentication providers through Janrain and adapts to mobile browsers. It’s also very important to note that Janrain will charge $10/month for a Plus account in addition to what you pay for Socialee, to gain all of these advanced features. Socialee is certainly not for your average brochure site. It’s a serious tool for serious sites and the price reflects this.

It’s our understanding that ExpressionEngine is a professional tool and you pay for that level of product.  This isn’t Wordpress. The add-on community here is indeed dynamic and I think the best thing that can happen is that devs like Yuri come along and release competent, competitive add-ons that force us to step up.

We’ve seriously considered giving away Socialee as an opensource module and charging only for support a la Magento, but our experience with this tends to be frustration all around, not to mention the complexities of setting up support/consulting agreements for every user who needs a 30 min fix (which is almost everyone due to the complex install!).

We had problems with the module/extension. It has limited capabilities, and is in fact an interface for Janrain. We had to fix an annoying bug related to XML parsing and add capabilities to retrieve extra information from Janrain. We also had trouble with the inline JS snippets.

As developer, it is more like a base class than a whole solution. Adding a way to extend the functionality would be a plus.

Can’t comment on price, lead dev was the one behind the buy.

I also gave up from Socialee. It’s not as good as it should be. Especially because it’s so expensive.
