Ive moved a site to my local environment and lots of images are missing. From looking in the page html it seems the entire image is missing, its not a broken link.

    Thanks

    Hi James.

    Silly questions…
Did you copy the images directory to your local machine?
Have you updated the Server Path and URL of each File Upload Destination to reflect you local server?

    What do you mean by:

How is a missing file not a broken link?

I copied all of the files, and im my site root is a folder called images.

What do you mean buy this, where are these options?:
‘Have you updated the Server Path and URL of each File Upload Destination to reflect you local server?’

    Thanks

Hi sorry James, I should have said:

If you’re using EE v2.1.x then they’re in Admin > Content Admin > File Upload Preferences.

If you’re using EE v2.2.0 then they’re in Content > Files > File Upload Preferences.

Ah yes, those links are wrong. Is there somewhere I can see all the details I need to change when moving a site? These types of URL settings seem to be everywhere with EE.

    Thanks

Also, ‘URL of Upload Directory’ is obvious but how do I find out my ‘Server Path to Upload Directory’?
    Thanks

I hear you. I normally copy/paste the path from Admin > General ConfigurationTheme Folder Path” (I can’t remember how it’s affected by migrating)

Here’s the page with all the info you need regarding migrating from server to server James: http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/installation/moving.html

You can also make a serverpath.php file containing:

    <?php echo $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']; ?>

Viewing the file in a browser will render you server path.

    Looking at the end of that page I have a few issues im afraid;

How do I know if my ‘Theme Folder Path’ is correct? I have ‘/var/www/html/themes/’ which I dont recognise as a directory path.
    Admin > General Configuration

    No url options under:
Admin > Channel Administration > Channels

The Captcha directories are wrong but when I change them my changes aren’t saved, they revert to the old incorrect settings:
Admin > Security and Privacy > Captcha Preferences

    Thanks

Ive now got images! Changing the File Upload Preferences fixed this. Im still a little concerned about the questions I asked in my last post in cast their screwing up something else on the site.
    Thanks

    Admin > General Configuration

If the themes path was incorrect, your Control Panel would break (missing CP html images e.g. button background etc. As far as I’m aware)

    No url options under:
Admin > Channel Administration > Channels

Go a couple of steps deeper… Admin > Channel Administration > Channels > Edit Preferences (of a Channel) > Path Settings

The Captcha directories are wrong but when I change them my changes aren’t saved, they revert to the old incorrect settings:
Admin > Security and Privacy > Captcha Preferences

curious. You may have to ensure that the Captcha directory EXISTS and has the correct Permissions BEFORE changing the path. I tried to change mine and got a ‘path invalid’ error.

Does anyone else know why a Captcha path will not accept being updated?

What do the settings here actually do?:
Admin > Channel Administration > Channels

The urls that were there were wrong for my local and the live site, but the live site seems to be working fine.
    Thanks

Sorry for butting in on this one like this but James take a look at downloading Deeploy Helper.

This will allow you to see nearly all the configuration paths and change them all very quickly from one place. May well help get you up and running a bit quicker on this one.

Also if you’ve moved your site from online to a localhost a good move is sometimes to delete the entire contents (not the index file though that can stay) of the system > expressionengine > cache folder just to make sure nothing funny happens there when you update entries and so on.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

Mark, butt in all you like mate, doozazzle.

    Good questions James:
I’ll just be duplicating the User Manual if I write it all out. Here’s the Channel Preferences page: http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/cp/admin/content_admin/channel_edit_preferences.html

The path setting you’re asking about allows (for example) you to render the path to a single Entry within that Channel, in a search results page (for example) using the {auto_path} tag.

    see: http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/modules/search/results.html#var_auto_path
