Hi, I’ve had a look for information on this with no joy so hopefully someone here will know.

Is it possible to apply the Censored Words settings to particular areas of the site only? I’d like to censor email addresses posted on our forums, while leaving those posted on our main site intact. For reasons I won’t go into here, even a hack of the forum files that isn’t really a long-term solution would be fine.

Also, can multiple wildcards be used when specifying words to censor? i.e. Can we censor *@*.* to strip out all email addresses?

    Thanks in advance…

    Hi, Muiris -

First, yes, you can use asterisks.  As per the user guide on word censoring:

This field contains the list of words that you would like to censor. Place each word on a separate line. Wild cards are allowed by adding a * to the beginning or end of a censored word. So, for example the wildcard test* would censor the words test, testing, and tester, while the wildcard *gress would censor the words progress and congress.

It is not possible to apply word censoring to only certain areas, however.  That would make for a great feature request.

    Thank you!

    Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the response. Good to know that more than one asterisk in an example is okay anyway.

As it can’t be limited by area, is there any way to exclude certain items from the list?

e.g. to censor *@*.* but exclude *@mysite.com so that our own email addresses wouldn’t be censored?

Hi, Muiris, there is no ‘whitelist’ as it were.  That would make another good feature request.  The only other option is to be very specific in what you censor out.

Thanks Lisa - we can always try a few options to cover the major email providers, i.e. *@hotmail.com, *@gmail.com, etc.

Likewise, I’ve found a few php script suggestions that we can play around with so hopefully we’ll find a solution that way. If I find anything robust, I’ll try to remember to post back here.

    Thanks for your help.
