I’m just wondering if there is anything native to EE that would allow me to set up an index of articles and indicate whether an entry has been previously viewed so I can put a “new” icon next to the article. Any insight or direction is appreciated.

You could use entry view tracking - http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/modules/channel/entry_tracking.html
If the entry view count is zero it means no-one has looked at the single entry page.
