Members / Activate Pending looks like it worked, but didn't activate selected members

Everything else in the installation seems to be working.
    ExpressionEngine: Version 2.1.3 Build 20110411

My own SuperAdmin account is working of course, and has been from the beginning. But the first two accounts I try to activate, it tells me the activation worked, and it even sends an email to the two users to say it worked, but if they try to log in, it says membership not activated yet.
Then, if I go into the Member / Activate Pending dialog again, they appear as not activated. I can Activate them over and over, but they don’t ever get activated.

Any clues? Is there a place I can go to view error messages under the covers?
Still a relative Newbie here. Sorry if there’s an obvious answer staring me in the face.

    Best wishes.

    Hi Liam,

Was this a fresh install or an upgrade from a previous version or build?

    Are you using any add-ons?

John - it was a relatively fresh install.
Includes EE itself, EE Forums, the headlines Theme from ThemeForest and Scaffold. All of that seems to be working very well in fact.
    any ideas?

    Thanks.
    Best wishes

    Liam,

Can you give me a link so I can register myself on your site please?
Then we can work through it from there

I registered on your site so leave that be for now and don’t activate me. Check your email

    Hi Liam,

This is because you’ve set the Default Member Group Assigned to New Members to “Pending”. Members automatically go in as Pending, so setting that option to Pending is throwing them right back in the Pending group. We’re going to remove Pending as an option in that dropdown in future releases. Hope that clears it up!
