For all those interested, I have found my solution.

Changing the URI protocol to “PATH_INFO” is what did the trick (in config.php):

$config['uri_protocol']    = "PATH_INFO";

I am pleased you managed to find the obscure reason for the non-working search and also that you posted the solution. Could you please mark the post title as [SOLVED] to assist others when searching for a similar problem.
