Forums Install Problem

I have a clean install of EE ( Version 2.1.3 Build 20110411 ) and I just purchased and installed the forums module today.  On the backend everything works perfectly fine. I was able to install the module, configure it, create the board, group and a forum.  However when I go to visit the forums page at http://www.chicagowomenshockey.com/index.php/forums/ I was just getting a Status 404 error.  I tried enabling the pages module as well, and now all I see is the one default template I created.

I read over a bunch of the documentation, and haven’t found a solution to this. Hopefully it’s something easy I missed that someone can point out to me.  Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the ExpressionEngine forums, supertorio.

Can you tell us what your general settings are for your forum? See the attached screen shot. Did you do something similar?

Let’s figure out a few more things.

Did you create a template called forums?

How much of the site is done? I’m not seeing anything other than the same thing I see when visiting the forum page..

The site is pretty much just a clean install.  I installed a bare bones code igniter, and so far have just enabled the pages module and created the default “hello world” template you are seeing.  Then I installed the forums module and configure it as so.  There was nothing in the docs about creating themes for the forums, so I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) the built in themes just worked.

    Hi supertorio,

You do not have to create a theme file for the forums to work. What is your default template group called and what is the Page URI of the single Pages module entry you created?

    Cheers

The default template group is just called “default”.

http://www.chicagowomenshockey.com/index.php/sub_requests/ is the page I’ve set up

    Hi supertorio,

Okay. Can you perform a test for me please? Create a template group called ‘test_group’ and then create a template in that group called ‘my_template’. On that template put only this:

    <h1>test_group/my_template</h1>

Once you’ve done that are you able to visit http://www.chicagowomenshockey.com/index.php/test_group/my_template and have it display correctly?

    Cheers

    Greg

    Sure,
I created them and it showed up just fine http://www.chicagowomenshockey.com/index.php/test_group/my_template

    Hi supertorio,

That’s very odd indeed. Do you have an .htaccess file doing any kind of redirects on your site? I notice that going to http://chicagowomenshockey.com/index.php/forums/ redirects to http://www.chicagowomenshockey.com/index.php/forums. I just want to rule this out as a potential cause.

    Cheers

I have a similar problem to this http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/188386/ I deleted my .htaccess file (I hadn’t set it up so it may be a hangover from something) and the site seems to work as planned but I still can’t see the discussion forums - just get the index/home page.

    Hi Sue,

Yes, thanks! I got a bit tied up and wanted to do a full backup so just got EE upgraded as per the instructions and the site seems to work. The instructions say I need to upgrade the discussion forums now.

    Thanks,

    John

There is no .htaccess file, the redirect to www. is done through DNS with dreamhost.

That being said, I finally got it working.  I wound up deleting the entire install and instead of unzipping locally before uploading, I uploaded the zips via ftp and did all the unpacking and installing via SSH and the command line.  Also the other thing differently I did was choose the “Agile records” default theme instead of leaving it blank.

In any case after the install, everything seemed to be working fine.  Thanks for the advice!
