    Hi folks,

I am brand new to EE (purchased non-commercial license for 2.0.) Decided to cut my teeth on it by re-designing my family’s website. I have searched for this answer, but I haven’t found the best approaches yet.

I want for people to come to the home page of the website and be forced to either login or register before they can go further. Basically no content should be accessible unless you are registered and have been approved (manually by me.) I’ve read some of the documentation on Member Groups and have toyed with it a bit. What I am looking for is best practices/advice on how to set this up.

If there’s a post somewhere else about this, I’d appreciate a point in that direction. I’ve just finished a couple of tutorials so the site is built for the most part, just need to get this member registration thing down pat.

    Thanks!

    Malcom

Basically it’s just a matter of building out the site, then setting access at the template level on all the involved templates.  There’s an “Access” link in the template manager, along with an option of a template to show if someone tries to view it while not logged in.  I’ve a family extranet built on EE in this fashion - runs in the same install as Boyink.com

Thanks a lot. Your ebook on building a small biz website got me this far, and has been generally awesome. I was about to grab your screencast on Member Groups but wasn’t sure if it would really be overkill for this site since the members will not really be accessing the Control Panel or posting content, just reading.

    Glad to hear it!

The screencast goes way beyond this - probably overkill in this case.

So if I wanted to make a template that would present users with the option to login or register, would that be the one presented here? http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/modules/member/login_form.html

    Yep.

So I searched for this but haven’t found it yet: How do I provide the option to register under this scenario? That template only has login fields.

    Ah -

Typically what we did was just register family members via the CP and send them their login.

Otherwise you’ll need to link them via the instructions on this page in the docs.

    Perfect, thanks!
