I’ve just installed EE 2.x the latest version and lots of icons are not showing up
what should I do? upload them again? as text or binary??

my first instinct - yes upload them again. upload text files (html, text, css, php) as text and images as binary. Although most FTP programmes will decide this for you now anyway (Filezilla for example). Files are often missed when uploading a few thousand bits - so see how that goes.
If that does not work, view the source of the page, or the css for where you know image references should be, and check that those images do exist in local and then on the server. maybe even try accessing them directly from the browser to see if they load, and or then check via ftp, or your hosts file manager maybe (if they offer one!)
