2 questions about the multiple site manager—

    1. Can I install Multiple Site Manager on a site that currently exsits (i.e. http://www.thissite.com) and then add on another site under another subomain (i.e. dev.mysite.com) without harming the site that exists?

    2. Can I move the site that’s on the subomain to a main domain (i.e. dev.mysite.com to http://www.mysite.com) without any troubles?

    Thank you!

    Hi, Lisa E.

Yes, you can use the MSM with an existing site. It will be separate from your first site.

It depends on your sub domain—I use cPanel a lot for clients, and in there you can create add-on domains, which is the same thing. So the answer is yes. But you may need some help from your host in the process.

    Hi Sue—

Thank you! I’m using Enginehosting and I’m sure I can work it out with them.
So—would I keep the original site installed and install MSM as a module inside of it? I’m just very confused as to how it works.

Thanks so much for your time & knowledge!

    Hi, Lisa -

I could swear I saw a post from you saying that you had moved forward with the installation?

To answer your questions, in case I’ve gone crazy -

The MSM is an expansion that sits on top of ExpressionEngine. It’s actually just 3 files.  Here are the installation instructions.

It should not impact an existing site, but if it does, we can use a config.php switch to disable the MSM and do some troubleshooting.

In all cases of concern, try in a development environment so you can learn without impacting your live site.
