In 10 years ExpressionEngine has never had a major security breach. We take security very (very) seriously, perform continuous audits, and respond to issues with security implications immediately.
Are there any certificates or sources to back this up somehow? I would want to have something at hand to show clients if needed.

Not sure what outside sources there may be that you could use but you can always peruse the changelog and see that there have not been many updates due to security issues (but there have been a couple). And I can tell you that when a security issue comes up all other work stops and that security issue is taken care of. All work. Period. We have some fairly high level clients that use our system including various agencies of the US Federal Government and we could not allow known security breaches to stay in place.
