Advice on multiple 'sub entry entries'

I have a client who needs to be able to put in ‘sub types’ of products within (ideally) a single entry. Each single product is likely to have different sub categories and I’m trying to make it as easy as possible for the client when putting in products, there are likely to be ~450 products with up to 5 or 6 sub types, so easy administration as is required.

I have highlighted the fields that need to be repeatable in the red box.

I don’t know if a Matrix would help, it’s my first thought, but with so many fields it could look confusing.

It’s that or use Playa for relating the products to each other somehow, but this functionality was going to be used for the products in their different categories (i.e. Product 1 is in category A, but Product 1 has a variant in category B too, as well as several sub-types within those.)

    Any advice is appreciated…

Maybe a third party e-commerce module would be a more appropriate solution? You could look at Carthrob, it comes with support for configurable products.

    Look at the options.

The client doesn’t need to sell the items directly through the site, they just need to catalogue them.
