Looking for some advice on how to start troubleshooting this issue. When trying to edit an existing entry or publish a new entry in a particular weblog the control panel hangs up for 2-3 minutes before displaying the edit or publish page. It only happens on one particular weblog. Editing or publishing for any other weblog performs just fine. Although after the first hang the CP hangs

The weblog in question only has 4 entries. And it was performing fine just a day ago. The client can’t remember what they were doing when they first noticed the hanging problem.

Not even sure how to begin troubleshooting this issue. The site is running on EE 1.7.0 build 20101018. I can provide any other information that might be helpful.

The first thing I’d do is clear out any cache files. Did they upgrade any third party add-ons? Is the weblog in question using any third party fields?

I cleared out all the cache files, but the problem still persists. The weblog is using Playa, Matrix, nGen File, and P&T Switch fields.

One guess is maybe a file they’ve uploaded with nGen File is giving the system fits. But since all entries in the weblog seem to have the same problem maybe that’s not the cause.

Anything I can look for in the database that might be causing the hangup?

Just tried to access a weblog entry again, and for the first time instead of displaying the entry page after hanging for 2-3 minutes, it instead after 2-3 minutes presented a blank page with this message:

MySQL ERROR:

Error Number: 2006

Description: MySQL server has gone away

Query: SELECT settings FROM exp_extensions WHERE enabled = ‘y’ AND class = ‘Cartthrob_ext’ LIMIT 1

They do have CartThrob installed, but it isn’t tied into this weblog yet, although it will be in the future. Does this give you any clues?

If you globally disable extensions in Admin > Utilities > Extensions Manager (big green button, don’t individually disable) - does the publish page then load quickly?

Disabling all extensions made the problem go away. So I added them back one by one. When FieldFrame is enabled the problem comes back again.

I went to Brandon’s site to make sure I have the latest version of FieldFrame and I do. My guess is that either Matrix, Playa, or P&T Switch might be causing the problem with the weblog as those are the fields that disappear when turning FieldFrame off. Just brainstorming. Any way to temporarily turn off those custom fields for that field group without losing information?

I can certainly post over at P&T, but want to make sure first you don’t have any other ideas try. Thanks for your input.

Unfortunately it’s not possible to disable individual extensions without losing data.  My recommendation would be to move this to a local server where it won’t impact your live site, and do the reduction testing there.

But it does sound like something that will need to go to P&T as well.
