Ok spent a bit of time on this and have not found a solution yes unfortunately.

How many sites are on your MSM license?

Can I get you to do a few things for me please?

I saw this work for a similar issue recently. Can you empty the exp_security_hashes table in your db. Just delete the rows that are in there not the table itself. make a backup of your database first.

Can you upgrade to most recent build (20110411)
Can you install this accessory please and let us know if any issue appears there

Okay have installed Health Check and I get the following potential problem:

“Your PHP session_save_path is not writable. To fix: chmod 775 /var/lib/php5”

Could this be the cause?

I also got this PHP warning when I installed the accessory:

“Message: is_writable() [function.is-writable]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/var/lib/php5) is not within the allowed path(s): (/var/www/vhosts/beam.uk.net/httpdocs:/tmp)”

It would be worth looking into but I don’t think that’s the culprit here. Please let us know what you find after emptying the exp_security_hashes table and performing a build update to make sure all files are in sync.

Okay updated to latest build and exp_security_hashes is empty. Doesn’t look to be any improvement. In Health Check I’m still getting the session_save_path error but thats it.

I think the open_basedir restriction may be the culprit here. Can you ask your host if it is possible to remove the restriction?

I received the following from the host:

“I have changed the open_basedir PHP variable to include “/var/lib/php5” to the allowed path(s) for beam.uk.net.
“

Is there anything else I need to do? At this stage there doesn’t look to be any change.

I logged back in again, and got the following error message when using the Health Check accessory:

So I suspect that’s still an issue.

Web hosts have confirmed that the issue is now gone and I’m not seeing that error within EE anymore but still doesn’t seem to have solved anything. :-(

Ok spent a lot more time on this. You can actually login in Internet Explorer and switch sites and no combination of settings that I can find work in either of your index.php files or config.php

While attempting to create a third MSM site as a test, I got

Fatal error: Call to undefined function comments_opened_notification_title()

which typically means that your language files are not up to date. If you have not made modifications to files in /system/expressionengine/language please go ahead and replace those files with the latest from the 2.1.3 download package. If you have made modifications and are able to re-apply them after updating the files please do so as well.

I’m not sure how much this impacts the MSM site itself but we should definitely get that sorted.

Looks like we found the bug. MSM site switching is based on a cookie, and when the system was trying to set your cookie, it was failing because it didn’t recognize your domain name extension. We fixed the bug in your EE install, and we’re also doing the same for EE 2.2 which should come out later this month.

Give it a whirl and let me know if you encounter any issues!

Seems to be working now, I’ll be doing some work on it over the next week so will let you know if I encounter anything.
