Dynamic IP address login problem

    Hi,

    I can never login to my CP when using a connection with a dynamic IP address.
    I’m guessing it’s checking the IP when authenticating and so when it changes (every few minutes) it would log me out.

    Is there a setting so that I can allow logins to not be restricted to a single IP address?

    Hi bikuta,

    You can disable Require IP Address and User Agent for Login in Admin > Security and Privacy > Security and Sessions. Does that work?

    Sorry for the late reply, but that doesn’t seem to work.

    Hi, bikuta - in the same place, can you try disabling Secure Forms and see if that helps?

    Thank you!

    Hi bikuta,

    Can I ask you to confirm whether you or anybody else has been able to log into the site CP before? With the settings changes suggested by Brandon and Lisa have you been able to actually login at all, even for a minute or two? Can you tell us a little bit more about this connection that you are using (is it a satellite IP service for example)? Also, which version and build of EE are you usingl?

    Cheers

    Greg

    We are able to login fine on a normal broadband/static IP connection. However we have a problem when using a 3G connection which has a dynamic IP address (changes about every minute). I just thought if I can login to other web apps there must be some way of logging into the EE CP.

    My EE is on the previous patch from the current one.

    Hi bikuta,

    Very odd, normally, the settings changes that Brandon and Lisa suggested would allow access from even the most troublesome networks. When you say you can log into other web apps do you mean that you basically have unrestricted usage across the web? Can I ask you to create a test template group and in the index template paste this code:

    <?php
    $remote = array('HTTP_USER_AGENT', 'HTTP_ACCEPT', 'REMOTE_ADDR', 'REMOTE_PORT');
    foreach($remote AS $key)
    {
        echo "{$key}: {$_SERVER[$key]}";
    }
    ?>

    Make sure and enable PHP on Output and then access that template from your 3G network. Please copy the output into a notepad, wait one minute, refresh the page and then copy that output into the notepad. Please post the results here.

    Cheers

    Greg

    @greg

    I experienced the same problem with the new EE while I was in Austin this March. The problem was that the network I was using in the hotel had a constantly changing ip address (looked like a sort of pool of ip-addresses). I could log in to the CP, but on the next refresh of CP I was logged out. This never happens when I’m on a static ip address e.g. at the office.

    I tried all kind of settings (cookies + session, cookies only, session only) but with no luck.

    This problem did not occur on EE1.7 installs though.

    I have no details of the network I was connected to, but it seemed like a regular WIFI network. (The SXSW/Hilton network).

    Thanks Robert. Also, try setting the Control Panel Session Type to Cookies Only. Are you still experiencing this, bikuta?

    I am experiencing this on EE 1.6.9 - you say this did not happen to you on EE 1.7, but did it ever happen on 1.6.9 or 1.6.8 etc.?

    Multiple members logging in at a conference room from a hotel keep getting logged out ever 2 minutes or so.  They are all access the same Wifi connection, and I’m going to assume it’s not static IP…

    Would you say the fix would be to upgrade to 1.7?

    rapturestudio,

    Did you try my suggestion? I don’t think there were any changes in this area between 1.6.9 and 1.7.1.

    If I change Session Type to “cookies only” then I won’t be able to set “Allow Multiple Logins From a Single Account” to No, correct?  One of the requirements of this particular site is to not allow multiple logins from one account since we have paying members and don’t want them sharing one username/paid account among many people.

    Also, from our log files, I can see that there is the same Session ID with several different IP addresses within the same minute (actually, within the same few seconds… and oddly, these IP addresses don’t even look to be from the same block of IPs - totally different providers), which seems very odd.  There’s no way that somehow different users in the same hotel conference room on a WiFi connection with dynamic IP are somehow getting served the same Session ID, is there?

    Is my only hope to switch to Cookies Only and just cross my fingers that paying members don’t share their username and password with all their friends and coworkers?

    Yes, that’s true.

    It sounds like that’s the case. It’s hard to say why, but there could be some “interesting” things going on with the connection there. Have you asked the hotel about this?
