I am moving my functioning website to a new host following a dispute. At the same time I am upgrading from 1.6.8 to 2.1.3, and moving the site to a new domain. I have installed EE2.1.3 on my new shared space at Clook, and have started manually shipping files over from my current host. I am having to move the whole site manually, as current host will not give me access to phpmyadmin or any other useful tools for backing up and moving the database.
So far ihave shipped over all the temp[lates, weblog field groups, categories, and image files etc. that i can access.
Is tghere anywhere where there are some clear step by step instructions on what I need to do to shift the site manually, to the new version of EE, and to the new domain - to get to the point where the site starts displaying at the new domain?

This sounds seriously painful! If you are going to do this manually then i would suggest just sgtarting fresh on 2.1.3 and effectively rebuild and re-populate - in other words manual like your doing.

But if you want to make life easier. There are hundreds of methods you could use:
External DB tool like navicat or sqlyog
a php script to export the db
an addon for ee to export or backup the db (look on devot-ee.com)

Yes it is painful! But I have already done a fair bit in terms of manually moving stuff. I have followed Boyink’s instructions on making the necessary changes to my templates, and have started to repopulate some of the channels with data, but website is still not displaying.

you refer to the hundreds of tools available for grabbing data from my current host. Can you recommend any specific ones? Life would be a whole lot easier if I could save all the old weblogs in some format and simply upload the data into the new channels.

not being rude here - but you are asking me to go off search through devot-ee to find you a tool to use because you don’t want to? Thats very cheeky and to be honest seen as lazy. I am only another customer helping out here because support probably will say this is not EE tech support related and boot you to another section. You have to put the effort in too!

    A search for backup on devot-ee: http://devot-ee.com/search/results/search&keywords=backup&channel=addons/
Direct database access from your desktop:
    http://www.navicat.com/
    http://www.webyog.com/en/
*** Community edition of SQLYOG: http://code.google.com/p/sqlyog/downloads/list

humble apologies and many thanks for your help so far. No, I didn’t expect you to go off and do the work for me - just wondering if you knew of a solution off the top of your head that might suffice! Actually, I wouldn’t even know where to start with the search terms on Devot-ee to get what I need, being a complete novice when it comes to extracting files from databases.

I’m sort of OK with the idea that I’m going to have to manually replicate the data from weblogs on current site to channels on new site as I’m not in a huge hurry - mainly because the current site is still working. My main problem is that the new site just isn’t displaying - all I’m getting in the browser is a blank page.

have you modified the config file to all the new settings to match the new host?

Yes,I’ve done that - although assumed the config file should be fine as it was a completely new istallation of EE on the new host.

okay, so the backend and front end is up and running, but the front end is just not displaying anything at all.
So the templates are copied across, tags are updated where needed for EE2, and a default template group has been selected?

Problem solved - I just hadn’t selected a default template group. Thank you so much for your help. Today I look in the mirror and i see Forrest Gump.

Hi, Dipsacus. As Nevsie mentioned, there are multiple ways to get information from one site to another. Devot-ee.com is going to be the best place to search for all your third party needs.

When it comes to importing data, I’ve successfully used DataGrab, with the caveat that I use it without categories and importing comments. So very basic usage.

But it looks like your real problem had to do with not having a default template group assigned. Glad you were able to find out what the problem was. Feel free to start a new thread if you have any more questions.
