This question may be related to a resolved thread.

I’m in the process of upgrading from 1.7.0 to 2.1.3 and just started having the same problem as above - the site is a blank page in the browser window which times out with this error:

    Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): Unknown error.

I’m getting this error both with the system turned on and turned off so I suspect it’s something at a pretty low level.

I can get into the control panel fine. The database connects perfectly and all fields are properly populated.

All upgraded add on’s have been successfully installed and activated.

I just finished fixing a bunch of templates that used HTML Stripper which was replaced by Strip_HTML (which uses a slightly different tag syntax).  During this step, the site was displaying EE error messages noting bad template tags. This step also created synced flat files in the template_files directory.

After fixing all incorrect tags, the site no longer would load.

I’m completely stumped and don’t even know where to begin debugging this.

    Any help much appreciated!

You’re not by any chance using Chrome are you?

There’s apparently a bug which causes this to happen using Chrome and if it happens in that browser it makes all other browsers bring up blank pages for the exact same site too.

Apparently if you flush your dns cache and do all the usual suspects such as restart your router, computer etc… then it gets rid of the problem. Something to do with Chrome and posting using it. Not sure what though.

If you’re not using Chrome then I apologise it’s just that I’ve seen this mentioned a lot regarding Chrome and thought that might be your problem here.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

Yes, I am using Mac OS Chrome for all of my EE setup/editing. I’ll give your suggestions a try tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed!

    best,
    David

Yep let us know how you get on. Hopefully it is just something as simple as that.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

    No dice.

Tried restarting my modem and router, then rebooting my machine and using Safari only to go into the control panel. Verified that the system was off and tried viewing the site.

Same time-out error. I’m not even seeing the offline message.

Did I miss doing something? And if not, what should I try next?

    Thanks!

David, I know you mentioned you only use Chrome, but what happens if you try something like FireFox or even Safari?

From everything I’ve read if this is indeed the issue that I was referring to then it doesn’t matter what browser you use as they will all exhibit the same problems. You need to flush the cache using dscacheutil -flushcache in the terminal or it will exhibit the same behaviour in all browsers.

Definitely can’t harm to try another browser though indeed.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

    Hi Sue and Mark,

I use both Chrome and Safari on my main machine and have Firefox on another.

I’ve started to narrow things down a bit:

After clearing the browser cache and restarting the browsers I can see the offline page.
If I turn the system back on, then I get the time-out error again.
If I turn the system back off, I still have the time-out error and have to clear all cache data before I can see the offline message again

    Here’s another possible clue:

I have a Quick Link set up in my CP to go to my test site URL. Clicking on that link goes to a redirect. The address looks like this:

    http://www.stretcher.org.php5-18.dfw1-1.websitetestlink.com/?URL=http://www.stretcher.org.php5-18.dfw1-1.websitetestlink.com/

Clicking this Quick Link with the redirect causes the same time-out error.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

p.s. Mark I’ll try your suggestion in Terminal.

Hmm I thought the site http://www.stretcher.org which is your site was coming up blank for you? Is that not the case? I can see that site fine from this end.

That’s our live site on the old server. Our host is transitioning to cloud-based servers so I’m staging on an entirely different box. This lets me get everything working without taking the site down. Here’s the URL for the staging server:

    http://www.stretcher.org.php5-18.dfw1-1.websitetestlink.com/

    Some progress:

The Strip_HTML seems to be the culprit. It won’t delete thru the EE control panel. After deleting it via FTP, the site renders with a template error.

Gonna now try Super Geeky Tagstripper instead and see if that works…

    UPDATE:

It works! Getting rid of Strip_HTML and using Super Geeky Tagstripper did the trick!

Go ahead and close this item. Thanks Mark and Sue!
