Ordering by category - any workarounds, please?

I gather categories are more or less dysfunctional in ExpressionEngine 2 - you can’t set the order manually because the control panel is broken, and you can’t retrieve entries in any order other than alphabetical (as far as I can see).

Does anyone know of any workarounds and / or plugins that will let me specify the order of my categories and allow me to retrieve entries in that order?

    Thank you for you help

    Hi richardjlyon,

Which version are you on? This should be fixed in the current 2.1.4 beta as well as the next stable release. There are also many add-ons that make working with categories easier. Does that help at all?

    2.1.3

Thanks. I saw that beta option, but I have no idea how to upgrade - I have plugins and config files and database files and weird 777/666 permission changes all over the file structure from the initial install and it is beyond me how to merge the 2.1.4 without wrecking the installation.

    Hi, Richard.

If you don’t feel comfortable upgrading to a beta version of EE, then don’t. We’d rather you back up your database and try this locally if possible.

Have you ever used a local install?

When it comes to upgrading, normally it’s pretty painless, but when the time comes we can assist you in upgrading.

Is there an ETA for either of these releases?

I’m just getting started with EE, so won’t have anything in production for a while. Do you think starting now with 2.1.4 is a good idea?

    cbad,

We don’t give out ETAs for releases. Did you try the fix suggested for EE2.1.3 in the comments of the Bug Report

OK, didn’t know that!  If you were just starting with EE (and knowing what you know), would start with 2.14 as a jump start on the future?

    Thanks!

And thanks for that too! I hadn’t seen the bug report even, but the fix worked perfectly.

    Thanks!

    Hi, cbad -

If this was for a mission critical site, then no, I wouldn’t use a beta.  But if it’s for a local installation that you’re working with, then no problem starting with the beta. It really depends on your circumstances.

    Does that help?

OK - I found the guidance on upgrading, it all went well and I can now customise the Category order and sort on it. Thanks all
