Does 1.6.9 -> 1.7.0 Upgrade Wizard Change Database Structure?

I’m in the process of moving my EE 1.6.9 site to a new host. Since my new host is live with a test URL, I’m able to use it as a staging server and fully test and debug the migrated site while keeping the real site live.

I’ve successfully moved the site to the new host and upgraded to 1.7.0. Everything works and looks good. Now I want to do a bit more development work on the staged site.

    Question:
While I’m working on the 1.7.0 site on the staging server, my editors will continue to work with the 1.6.9 site on the old host.

When I’m read to make the switch, can I simply re-import the 1.6.9 database with any new material to the 1.7.0 site? Or does the database get changed by the upgrade wizard during the upgrade process (making this method unworkable)?

    Thanks!
    David

Hi, David. If you look through the upd_170.php file, you’ll see there are no database changes. So you should be OK.

What kinds of changes are you attempting to make? You may only want to update members and entries, but not templates.

    Does that help?

    Hi Sue,

Thanks for the fast reply. Where would I find the upd_170.php file?

I probably will want to make some template changes. For example, I’d like to add a lightbox feature for images tweak some template logic and maybe add a new layout to give my editors one more layout option.

I’m hoping I can take advantage of my live staging server, make some improvements to the site, then bring in the content from the old site and not have to worry about content sync issues. Make sense? Are there any other issues I should be thinking about?

    The site is here: http://www.stretcher.org

Our developer did some innovative work with EE and we’re vey happy with it.

    UPDATE:

I just did a test of backing up the 1.7.0 DB, nuking it on the host, creating a new DB with same name and user info, and importing a freshly exported DB from the 1.6.9 site.

After setting the paths up, (very fast and easy thanks to the Deeploy Helper module), everything was back and looking fine. So I think I’m good to go!

Hi, David. Each of the ud_whatever.php files are found in the same place, /system/updates.

But it looks like things are working again… Don’t hesitate to post again as needed.
