More Weblogs = More Load Time

I am starting a new thread on another issue of mine.  What I’ve noticed with EE 1.6.9 at least, is that the more weblogs you have, the slower the load time.  If this is not news please let me know but it seems to me that it shouldn’t necessarily matter. Here’s an issue I’m tackling right now:

I’ve moved our site to Engine Hosting to rule out any server issues.  Secondly, I’ve followed every step in the EE manual for streamlining templates.  I’m proud to say that my templates (without weblogs) load in less than 3 seconds.  One common denominator is that templates that contain more weblogs take more time to load than those with less weblogs.  So literally as an example I might have a template that has 20 weblogs loads in 9 seconds, another that has 40 weblogs might load in 17 seconds and the one with 50 or more loads in like 39 seconds.

Now that I’m convinced that the weblogs are causing the issue, I sought out some things that I can do to help it.  I’ve added the disable=” parameter which seemingly had little or no effect.  Other than that.. I’m kinda lost.  I’ve consulted all the literature that others have posted on the forums including to my other thread to no avail.

I’m at the mercy of EE support right now begging for some insight specifically into weblogs and how to solve this problem.  Currently I’m using Solspace’s “Favorites” module with the weblogs as an FYI, but the problem remained long before the installation of that module.

Thank you guys for any help or insight you can give me.

We are lucky in that we have a unique situation that might end up saving us.  Once the page is built nothing will change, not the weblog names, no new weblogs will be added.  The only thing that gets updated is the file itself on the server that each weblog entry points to—and even with that the filename remains the same; the file gets replaced each day.  That being the case, on the suggestion of Erik, we’ve decided to go with Solspace’s Static Caching add-on.  This would cache the page and load it in seconds.  I will report back and let you all know the result.

    Hi Jeramiah,

Can you clarify what you are referring to by have a number of weblogs on a page? Are you talking about entries in a particular weblog? Also, I’m a bit unclear what you mean when you say that the file get replaced each day. Can you please provide some more information? Is this for the site in your signature?

    Cheers

    Greg

Sure thing.  I basically have a page that has about 45 weblogs… each weblog probably has about 10 posts or less… sometimes just two so it varies.  The site in question is http://www.foxprodtest.us/index.php/site/futures.  You can see how it loads very slowly.  What happens is this page will be static.  It will never be touched once it’s done.  Everyday the client will upload pdf files to the server and replace the files from the day before… with the same filename.  So that’s why I was thinking using Solspace’s static caching.

    jeramiah,

that seems like an awful lot of weblogs for one template.

Did they all have to be weblogs? Would categories not work with one weblog?

So that’s why I was thinking using Solspace’s static caching.

Template morsels from Solspace may work better for you here. They can advise better though.

Or even just view the source of the page and copy and paste the relevant HTML back into your template
Keep your existing tags in another template never to be accessed unless you need to change the mark-up in any way or add anew document
