This question may be related to a resolved thread.
I am not sure why this thread was marked as resolved when this critical bug is still in the latest non-beta release of ExpressionEngine. Custom orders in categories are not saved.
Could you please inform us when the fix for this critical bug will be available?

Your thread was closed because the issue you had was related to a bug which has already been reported. If it was a new bug then we would have kept the thread open to gather as much new detail as possible to create a bug report with you.
Your focus now is the current bug report which has a status of already been fixed in the beta for the next release. We don’t provide dates for these releases unfortunately.
If you scroll down the comments though there is a fix supplied here.
If you wish to add or ask anything else specific to that bug then please feel free to comment on the bug report
