Can you secure an uploads folder? How do you secure a "downloads" channel?

HI EE’ers.  Is it possible to secure an uploads folder?  I have a client looking to add a member downloads functionality with a couple of specific criteria:

    1) files should be assigned to a specific member (so not secured by member group)
    2) ideally the location of the files should be masked or the URL to access it be dynamically created and sessional in nature
    3) the original file should not be accessible by other means (i.e. if you guessed the full path to the file, ideally it should still require you to log in)

Is this possible with EE?  I think for #1 and #2, the Protected Links add-on might do the trick.  The other way i was looking at doing it was using the Solspace User module to add all of my members to the authors multi-select box and assign an entry/file to one or more authors, using their assignment as the author to determine whether they should see the file.  DevDemon’s Channel Files add-on seems to cover some of this as well.

I know with EE there’s multiple ways to do things normally.  I’m interested to know if anyone has their own approach to something like this they can share with me.

    Thanks,
    John
