    1) The Server Wizard
    I downloaded the wizard to see if my server is the right one for EE.
    It returned errors that are not clear to me on two different servers.
    Here are the results:
    Critical Errors
    To complete the wizard check, the following error(s) must be addressed:
    Unable to connect to your database server   (on my godaddy one)
    Unable to select your database   (on my other server “tch”)
    MySQL (Version 4.1+) support in PHP   NO (on both)

    Will EE FAIL on these servers due to this or is your EE WIZ out of date, or what is wrong?

    2) Problems when trying to install EE ver 1.7:
    I followed the directions http://expressionengine.com/legacy_docs/installation/installation.html
    AND
    Make a database FIRST? How? What level of MySQL 4.1 or 5? There is hardly any indication in the instructions. I DID make a database though, but I chose 4.1 for the MySQL. Is there any further instruction regarding this? There should be I think.
    AND
    I use Dreamweaver to upload my files. Do I need to understand the binary asci thing?
    AND
    I could NOT find the variable to change the system folder name, and there was no indication in the install instructions as to whether to change every instance in the EE folder. In other words, when I renamed the folder “system” to “systemXYZ” Dreamweaver asked me if I want to update links and I said yes which is good, right?

    Why do the install instructions not address this important idea? Either the EE folks assume we are high level programmers, or I have the wrong instruction guide which is possible since I am installing the version I bought in 6/2009. And, there were many other files that are referred to in the install instructions that did not line up with my actual files in the EE folder. Please help me understand.

    Hi, magicss,

    We’re sorry you are having so many problems with installing EE 1.7.0.

    First things first - I’d use something other than Dreamweaver to upload your EE files to your server.

    I recommend FileZilla (you can find it by querying in Google) which is a great cross platform FTP/SFTP program.

    While EE can be made to run on GoDaddy, I don’t normally recommend it. What is your other server tch?

    Is this a professionally managed server? Is it running on Linux or Windows?

    As far as the version of MySQL goes, the bare minimum is listed here:

    http://expressionengine.com/legacy_docs/requirements.html

    On my MediaTemple installs

    Yes, you need to create a database first. Most hosts will either create a database for you, or they will assist you in creating one using PHPMyAdmin or a similar tool.

    PHP Version 5.2.14
    MySQL version 5.0.32

    is what they use there.

    When you rename the system folder, you don’t need to do anything different to any file other than the path.php file. In that file, you’ll edit it and change the value of the system path.

    $system_path = "./systemXYZ/";

    You said you were installing the version you bought in 2009, but 1.7.0 was released in 2010 - which is it?

    Hi Sue,
    Thanks much.
    The installation directions say
    “Open /index.php and update the $system_path to point to your renamed system directory”
    And you point me to the path.php file.
    I understand, but it seems like the directions should be accurate. Maybe I am missing a sentence or a phrase since I tend to read too rapidly….

    I am using 1.7 (I just downloaded the version I am allowed to due to my earlier purchase. I actually never used it until now.

    My install was ok (I installed and made a database before your reply). The one thing I wish is that I could do the more secure system folder name (I see why that is better), but I could not understand the directions. There were FAR more out of date references than just the one I have possibly pointed out. In fact, even once I installed, the out of date refs continued as I opened my index page in my EE folder to find these how to links from EE go to generic pages and I have to search for the content I need from there:
    Learning resources:
    Getting Started Guide
    Quick Start Tutorial
    Video Tutorials

    Oh well, I will figure it out, but for now, it is good to at least mention this.

    That sounds like directions for an EE2.x install. Can you link to where you saw this?

    Are you talking about the sidebar links in the default EE theme installed perchance?

    YES, I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT. I THINK I DID NOT UNDERSTAND THAT UNTIL NOW.

    YES, FOR SURE THAT IS WHAT I MEAN.

    Hi, magicss - I think what you’re wondering is about just what these two lines are:

    {assign_variable:my_weblog="default_site"}
    {assign_variable:my_template_group="site"}

    and how they get used in the default templates for EE1.7, is that right, or can you be more specific?
