    Hello guys!

As of next week we will be upgrading the EE installation in:
    http://clienteisa.ne.com.co/
From 1.6.8 to 2.1.3 with MSM (As the business will split 4 sites in EE)

We currently host this in a VPS server with Verio.

    My questions:

    - Should we first upgrade from 1.6.8 to 1.7.0 in the same server and then move the installation to the new server with EE 2.1.3?
    or
    - Should we just move the 1.6.8 content and installation to the new server and upgrade there?

Or what do you guys suggest we do? in what order?

Your suggestion and advice is highly appreciated,

    Best,

    Nicolas E.

    Nicolas,

First of all confirm your new server meets our server requirements and that you have run the server wizard.

You don’t have to upgrade to EE1.7.

I would recommend moving the 1.6.8 to the new server and then upgrading there. That way if there is issue, then you are dealing with it in its finally resting place and no tits temporary home. Make sense?

    Got it John,

Can you point me in the right direction?
Where can I find a good and detailed moving guide?

    Thanks!

    Hi Nicolas E,

There are a couple of Wiki entries about moving servers - one is here. In general though, do this:

    1. On your old server before the move remove any cookie domain config items and clear your caches completely
    2. Copy all of your site files to the new location
    3. Export your DB to an SQL file.
    4. Create the DB on the new server
    5. Import the SQL file you exported
    6. Check your config file to make sure that any paths are renamed appropriately
    7. Login into the CP and change your preferences to match your new site including replacing any cookie domain values.

You may want to override as many of the config items as possible so that you can change them all easily in a text file. The full list of EE 1.x overrides in also in the Wiki.

Additionally, if you perform all these steps before switching the DNS then you can test it all works before it goes live by adding an entry to your hosts file to match the new server IP address.

    Cheers

    Greg
