    Hello

    ee.1.6.8
    Build:  20091002

Rather than employing a .htaccess method to restrict access to a particular template/folder area of a website, I’m trying to use http authentication on a template (as per http://devot-ee.com/articles/item/using-ee-built-in-http-authentication-for-restricting-development-access/).

I’ve followed the instructions, but maybe I’m missing something as I just can get this to work.

I am entering the correct username and password, but I keep getting the following message:

The user name or password you entered for this area on mywebsite.co.uk:80 was incorrect. Make sure you’re entering them correctly, and then try again.

I’ve reset the password 3 times now and still not working.

    Any suggestions much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance
    Peter.

    Peter,

Does that user live in a new member group you created for them? The dummy group?
Is your site switched on or off?

    Hi John,

Yes, my member group which I’ve called “Restricted” has 1 member.
My chosen template is restricted to that specific member group (ie: radio button for ‘can view this page’ is checked to yes, all other groups are on no).
    System is on too.

It’s weird as the authentication is working, but the username and/or password combo isn’t being accepted.

Hi, mathalete - Can you let us know if you’re running PHP as a CGI process?  Or is it running as a module?  You’ll need to confirm that with your host.

    Thank you.

I am afraid that might be the problem. Please note how EE inthe CP points out that “this ability is typically only available when PHP is run as an Apache module.

HTTP Auth in your EE templates via our feature won’t work. You could try your own http authentication with PHP, but I can’t guarantee that it will work. Might still be worth a try, though.
