I just purchased a Freelancer license, and I’m trying to upgrade from an old 1.5.2 Core installation… I followed the upgrade from 1.x instructions at http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/installation/update_from_1.x.html, but right after I “click here to begin” the wizard, I get the following database error:

    A Database Error Occurred
    Error Number: 1146
    Table ‘ee.exp_sites’ doesn’t exist
    SELECT `site_system_preferences` FROM exp_sites WHERE site_id = ‘1’
    Filename: core/Installer_Config.php
    Line Number: 165

I’ve looked around the support forum, but it seems like most of the answers involve upgrading to 1.7, then 2.1.3…  but I don’t have download access to a 1.7 build—probably because I was a Core user?

Any ideas on how I can go about upgrading?  Or is there a way to do a fresh build, but safely import all my old settings and entries, etc.?

    Thanks in advance!

You’re correct, you won’t be able to upgrade to Freelancer that way.

What you could do is purchase the third party addon DataGrab which allows you to import entries via .csv, RSS feeds, etc.

    That’s disappointing.  :-(

Is it an issue of the freelancer license, or the issue of the original install being Core?  If it’s the license issue, would a non-commercial license be able to upgrade properly?

The reason I ask is this:  If I’m going to spend another $45, I’d rather just make it $50 and get the Non-Commercial license… assuming that would actually work.

Actually, that’s a better solution. Yes, you’d be able to upgrade using the Non-Commercial license. Sorry I didn’t think of it before.
