I have been scouring the docs, but still have a number of question about how comment notifications work.

    1. Does anyone who comments get “subscribed” to comments? If not can you
    2. What about for an anonymous user that does not have a member account, can they subscribe to comments?
    3. How can one give a member account the ability to manage subscriptions, what about a non-member?
    4. What if one integrates with Facebook connect? Does this make all notifications null?

    Thanks!

    Hi, nitecode.

Logged in users and anonymous commenters have the ability to have comments be subscribed to them. You’d manage the comment from inside the comment itself:

You’ll see something like this at the bottom of every comment notification you receive:

To stop receiving notifications for this comment, click here:

with a url of some sort. (The same thing should be for regular members and anonymous commenters.) Regular users can also view their subscriptions as a group, but not non-members.

As far as Facebook connect goes, I’ve no real idea. That’s a third party issue.

    Does that help?

    Hi Sue, Thanks for responding.

It does not seem like this is happening on my instal. If I post a comment when I am logged out, and use a different name/email address then is associated with my member account, I do not get any notifications? The author of the Channel Entry is notified that someone posts, but the anonymous commenter is not. Is there some configuration I need to do like “auto_subscribe = yes”? Or better yet, ad a way for a user to select, notify of new comments with a check box?

Just to make sure we are talking about the same thing, this is for Channel Entry Comments, not Forum Module Comments.

The functionality you describe above is what I am looking for, but does not seem to be working for me.

    Thanks again

    nitecode,

Take a look at the Comment Submission Form Docs.

In the example code you can see the following.

    <label><input type="checkbox" name="notify_me" value="yes" {notify_me} /> Notify me of follow-up comments?</label>

Let us know if that works for you

I’ll test further, but looks like that was what I am looking for, hidden in plane sight.

I am noticing more and more there seem to be a lot of functions that are not clearly listed as parameters, or tags in modules. Where can one see a complete list of ee tags, and what is available for different modules etc?

    If I go to:
    http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/modules/comment/entries.html

{notify} me is not referenced anywhere… Where would I find a list of all available tags, and function. Love the forum, but seems there should be a clear documentation of this elsewhere for developers.

    Thanks again John!

    Hi, nitecode.

One way to see what’s available is to do a local install, and install the Agile Theme templates. That’s what I use when testing functionality.

If you see anything missing in the docs, please let us know and we’ll see about upgrading/beefing up what’s there.

    Sound OK?
